Fire Department FAQ

Does the Logan Fire Department cooperate with and assist other fire agencies?

Answer: Yes! The Logan Fire Department has automatic and mutual aid agreements with the other fire departments in Cache Valley. Those other agencies are "pre-programmed" into our dispatch computer and are automatically called upon when Logan units are tied up on other emergencies or when additional help is needed in the Logan coverage area to handle a large emergency. Conversely, the Logan Fire Department is also pre-programmed to respond similarly to other cities and towns in Cache Valley that need similar help.

Why does the Fire Department respond to medical emergencies with a fire truck?

Answer: In a nutshell, we have to "take the fire station with us to every call." The Logan Fire Department responds to an average of about 10 emergencies each day with very limited staffing (two fire crews and two medical crews). The calls tend to "come in bunches" of two, three, four at a time. The calls range from auto and structure fires to medical emergencies, vehicle extrications, hazardous materials spills, carbon monoxide calls, etc. We take a large "pumper" to the medical calls, in addition to the ambulance, because on most medical emergencies we need at least four personnel and, yet, the personnel on the pumper must be ready with the right equipment to respond to the next emergency.

Are the men working as firefighters also running the ambulances?

Answer: Yes, all of our firefighters are also trained as Paramedics or EMT-I's. Each day personnel are rotated through assignments so they spend time in each position.

Are there any ambulances stationed at the hospital?

Answer: No, there are no ambulances stationed at the hospital. The ambulances are stationed in Logan, Smithfield and Hyrum fire stations.

Do ambulances transport patience to the Cache Valley Specialty Hospital?

Answer: Yes, patients meeting certain requirements will be asked their choice of hospitals. If patient meets requirements and has no preference they will be taken to the closest hospital. Patients with certain conditions that may be life threatening must be transported to Logan Regional.

Do I always need to pull to the right when emergency vehicles are approaching.

Answer: Yes, drivers of emergency vehicles are taught to pass everyone on the left side. You should always pull to the right to allow them to pass on the left. If you find yourself in a precarious position where you are stopped but feel like you are in the way just remain stopped and we will go around you. Even if you are traveling the opposite direction of an emergency vehicle pull over and stop because they may need to turn left through your lane of traffic.

Does the fire department pass off Scouting merit badge skills.

Answer: Yes, we will pass of certain skills upon request. We do not currently have the resources to teach and pass off entire merit badges. Instructors, please call and specify which skills you would like us to help you with. We would love to help you learn about fire safety, first aid, safety and emergency preparedness. Call 716-9500 to set up an appointment.
