NOVA

NOVA carIn 2006, Logan City Police Department sent Detectives who were teaching the DARE program to be trained to teach the NOVA program. Following this training Logan Police worked with Logan School District to implement pilot classes at Wilson Elementary.  Four fifth grade teachers who had the DARE program taught in their classes for many years agreed to have the NOVA program taught for the 2007 year. The result was a unanimous decision between the four teachers that the NOVA program should replace the DARE program in all Logan schools. Chief Russ Roper, Detective Denny Bird, and Principal Frank Schofield from Wilson Elementary approached the Logan School Board and reported the positive responses from the Educators as well as the students and their families. It was agreed that while NOVA retains many of the principles found in DARE, it has been fine tuned to address the specific needs of our community and therefore would be a greater benefit to our children and community. NOVA is currently being taught in all six Logan elementary schools by Detective Bird and will be implemented at Mount Logan Middle School by Detective Nate Mutter in the fall of 2008.

NOVA Mission StatementNurturing youth to seek out positive Opportunities, internalize good Values, and to accept Accountability for their choices in life. N.O.V.A. assists parents, families, and communities in protecting youth from the potentially devastating effects of illegal drug use, violence, and negative media influences.”

NOVA is a 15-week program taught at the fifth grade level by Detective Denny Bird of the Logan City Police Department. Students participating in the program receive material from the department free of charge.  Detective Bird spends time with students in the classroom, at lunch, and on the playground building rapports that last far beyond the students' time in the program.

NOVA will also be taught at Mount Logan Middle School starting in the fall of 2008.  This course will be a four-week program taught at the 7th or 8th grade levels by NOVA officers.  Students participating in this program receive a N.O.V.A. folder and program material.
