Police Reserve Corps

Date Established: 1970

The Corps consists of Law Enforcement Certified Officers and Special Functions Certified Officers. Duties include assisting Department with special events, extra manpower for Patrol, special security assignments, transit system patrol, and any other duties needed by the Department.

Reserve Officers are required to work 16 hours per month and obtain 40 hours of law enforcement training annually to maintain their certification. Some assignments are paid but most are volunteer time. Reserve Officers are trained by full-time officers and are allowed to perform all law enforcement duties while under the supervision of the full-time officer. The Reserve Corps volunteers over 2700 hours of manpower per year for the Department.

Reserve Officers are required to be certified by Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) prior to being appointed to the Reserve Corps. The Department provides uniforms, radios, vests, coats, and other clothing items. The volunteers are required to provide their own leather gear, firearms, footwear, and hardware.

Being a Reserve Officer provides experience for those seeking full-time employment in a law enforcement career. The experience gained is given credit when applying for full-time positions by most law enforcement agencies in the region and enables a candidate to maintain their certification while waiting for full-time employment.

Many of our Reserve Officers are citizens that work full-time in the private sector and participate as a volunteer in the Corps to enhance the quality of life in the community. These senior members have served from 10 years to over 20 years, dedicating much of their off time assisting Logan City Police with serving the community needs.

The Reserve Corps Captain, Van Stirland has served more than 20 years in the Logan City Police Reserve Corp. He directs and manages the Corps. Lt. Tyson Budge is the full-time liaison for the Corps.

If you are interested in applying for a Reserve Officer position, please complete the application form for Reserve Officer and attach a copy of law enforcement officer or special function officer certification and submit to:
